Median age 43.6 places Hungary near the top of Europe's aging league table, with a TFR mired around 1.55 and negative natural change every year since the 1990s. Post-2004 accession triggered an estimated 300,000–500,000 working-age departures to Austria, Germany, and the UK — primarily the educated young. The 'tight' 4.5% headline unemployment masks the fact that the most AI-trainable cohort is already abroad; what remains is an aging automotive workforce and a stalled natalist compensation experiment. Old-age dependency at 32.2% and climbing means Hungary will be funding pensions with a tax base that AI is about to automate.

Hungary has no coherent national AI strategy to speak of. The government has pinned its industrial hopes on luring Chinese battery and EV manufacturing (CATL's Debrecen plant, BYD's Szeged plant) as a hedge against the German automotive transition, while offering natalist tax breaks to coax Hungarians into having three children. Funding for retraining, digital skills, or labour-market transition is skeletal; meaningful AI legislation has been deferred to Brussels while domestic policy chases demography and energy sovereignty.
