Median age 44.5 and old-age dependency of 30.9% place Austria firmly in 'quiet demographic decline' territory, partially masked by EU free-movement inflows from Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and the Western Balkans who fill tourism, construction, and care-work roles. Youth unemployment at 12.2% and rising is the visible tip; the deeper issue is that Austria's tight labour market is structurally dependent on imported workers doing precisely the routine service tasks generative AI is now automating. Kickl's pivot toward remigration rhetoric would, if acted upon, expose the underlying arithmetic: the Austrian economy does not have enough native workers to staff its tourism peaks or finance back-offices, and AI is arriving faster than any repatriation programme could possibly backfill.

Austria has no coherent national AI strategy for labour displacement. It piggybacks on EU regulation (AI Act) while FPÖ-led rhetoric pivots toward immigration restriction rather than reskilling or industrial renewal. The dual vocational training system — once the envy of Europe — is being hollowed out as apprenticeships in automatable sectors dry up. No serious conversation about AI-driven services displacement in tourism or finance.
